ArticleMercy College Participates in Go RED for Women Luncheon

On Friday, November 13 eight Mercy College of Ohio Cardiovascular Technology program students and faculty members volunteered at the Go RED for Women luncheon hosted by the American Heart Association. Students and faculty members helped with set-up and in various areas throughout the venue including the Big RED Chair. This is a fun photo opportunity for the luncheon guests (and the students usually manage to talk the photographer into taking their picture, too). This has become an annual event for the CVT program with students and faculty looking forward to participating next year. Mercy College of Ohio is proud to volunteer at an event and for a cause consistently supported by Mercy Health.

Lindsey Gutierrez, R.T. (R)(CT), a student in the Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging program at Mercy College of Ohio, was recently published in the ASRT’s Radiation Therapist, Volume 24, Number 2. Her article titled, “When Mom or Dad Have Cancer: Helping Kids Cope” originated from a course project experience in the Medical Imaging program.

ArticleMercy College to Start $3 Million Construction Upgrade

Just as finals are over and the Christmas break begins on Monday, December 16, 2013, Mercy College of Ohio will begin phase one of a three-part science laboratory construction project. The $3 million dollar project, estimated to be completed in 2015, will create an interactive learning environment for Mercy College students.

Mercy College of Ohio’s spring enrollment is 1199 students, an increase of 88 or 7.9% from spring 2015. The Toledo Campus has 1038 students compared to 985 in 2015, up 5.4%. The Youngstown location has 161 students compared to 126 in 2015, up 27.8%.

Mercy College of Ohio strongly believes it is important that all students maintain health care coverage to help ensure academic success and well-being. In addition, to be in compliance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA), all individuals are required by law to have health insurance coverage. To assist with this goal, Mercy College of Ohio is again offering our Student Health Coverage Plan provided by United Health Care (UHC). We believe this plan provides excellent levels of health coverage with low out-of-pocket costs when compared to other plans offered commercially or through the ACA website.

ArticleMercy College Banner Installed at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital

Since the Youngstown location of Mercy College of Ohio (Mercy College) opened in 2003, it has consistently enrolled high quality students and made a great impact on the community. Of the 433 graduates from the Youngstown location, 91% work in the greater Mahoning Valley helping to address the shortage of Registered Nurses in the area. Interim Dean of Mercy College's Nursing Division, Patricia McAllen PhD, RN, CNE, says, "The overwhelming majority of our graduates choose to work at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital but as a Registered Nurse they can literally find employment wherever they choose to live. We are so pleased students can get a quality education, graduate and then  and graduates can find employment where they want to live, learn, and work." To promote educational opportunities in the area, a new 35ft high by 20ft wide banner with information about Mercy College was installed on Thursday, January 21  on the Cardiac Rehab Building of St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital that houses Mercy College's Youngtown location.

In response to the fact that the demand for nurses has reached levels not seen in 80 years, Mercy College of Ohio is increasing the number of students being accepted into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program to 96 (33% increase) in August of this year. This is in addition to 64 students that will be accepted into the BSN program in January of 2019 and 152 students being accepted into the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing program in August.
