Mercy College to Start $3 Million Construction Upgrade
College to provide new learning and science laboratory spaces for students
Toledo, OH - Just as finals are over and the Christmas break begins on Monday, December 16, 2013, Mercy College of Ohio will begin phase one of a three-part science laboratory construction project. The $3 million dollar project, estimated to be completed in 2015, will create an interactive learning environment for Mercy College students. Working with SSOE, the initial phase will be completed by The Lathrop Company. Mercy College’s plans for the space include areas for instruction in a wide variety of sciences which include chemistry, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, physics and biology and general sciences.
When Barbara Stoos, Ph.D., Associate Dean of Science and Mathematics at Mercy College, joined the staff more than 15 years ago, she inherited a hospital laboratory in which to teach laboratory classes to college students. Although the hospital laboratory has served the College well, it has become more difficult to use in the face of a ten-fold increase in enrollment and the number of laboratory classes being offered. “We restructured the lab the best that we could, but the space allocation provides challenges to professors trying to teach and watch students as they work on experiments,” Dr. Stoos explained.
The new laboratory space will provide 5 separate laboratory classrooms, accompanied by preparatory, balance, storage, and autoclave rooms. It will give Mercy College’s growing student population access to learning resources that will greatly enrich their educational experience, help to ensure attainment of student learning outcomes and enhance their preparedness to enter the workforce after graduation.”
“It’s up to us to provide the very best academic experience possible for our students and our future in providing healthcare workers for our community. I am truly excited to be part of this new project”, stated Dr. Stoos.
Mercy College’s primary focus is healthcare. All of the degree programs have a strong science component, especially Human Biology, thus most all of Mercy College students should benefit from the enhanced laboratory space.
Mercy College of Ohio is a Catholic undergraduate institution sponsored by Mercy. It focuses on healthcare and health science programs and offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Health Care Administration, Human Biology, Medical Imaging and Nursing and Associate of Science degrees in Cardiovascular Technology, General Studies, Health Information Technology, Nursing and Radiologic Technology. The College also provides continuing education and short-term certificates, enabling individuals to quickly develop knowledge and skills to gain employment or advance in their careers.
