Michael Current: From Equipment Tech to Healthcare Leader, One Step at a Time

Michael Current, RRT, CDME, began his journey with Mercy Health–Springfield in 2011, working in Movable Medical Equipment. There, he tracked, cleaned, repaired, and stocked vital equipment throughout the hospital.

“High school wasn’t my thing—I was bored and honestly not a great student,” Michael admitted. “So starting college as a first-generation college student was intimidating.”

Even with the responsibilities of a new husband and father, with the encouragement of his managers and support from his family, Michael enrolled in the associate degree program in Respiratory Therapy at Rhodes State College. Balancing full-time work with a 90-mile commute to classes wasn’t easy, but his determination paid off.

Recognizing his potential, Mercy Health leaders continued to support Michael’s growth and development. Encouraged to pursue further education, he enrolled in the fully online Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration (HCA) program at Mercy College of Ohio, taking full advantage of Mercy Health’s education benefits.

“I’m grateful for the confidence they had in me,” he said. “And not having to drive anywhere for classes made a big difference with my schedule.”

Now serving as Supervisor for Durable Medical Equipment, Michael leads a team that ensures patients have the equipment they need to safely return and recover at home. He credits the HCA program with helping him grow both professionally and personally.

“The classes were incredibly relevant to my role,” he shared. “The one that had the most immediate impact was Healthcare Finance. It helped me identify ways to better manage our department’s assets—improving financial performance and giving leadership clearer insight into our operations.”

Michael is on track to earn his bachelor’s degree in August 2025, and he already has his sights set on the Master of Health Administration.

“I’ve come a long way since my early days at Mercy, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of my managers, family, and the educational opportunities Mercy has given me. I want others to know it’s possible. You just have to take that first step.”
