Jonathan Lehman, a senior BSN student at Mercy College of Ohio, was instantly fascinated when he first learned of 3D printing (also known as rapid prototyping). While it has been around since the 1980s, 3D printing was mostly used by large businesses utilizing commercial 3D printers that can cost more than $100,000. Only recently did 3D printers become available in the form of desktop printers. Jonathan had seen little trinkets made by desktop 3D printers but when he saw a functional mechanical hand prosthetic made almost entirely from a 3D printer, he became captivated.

Mercy College Banner Installed at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital

Since the Youngstown location of Mercy College of Ohio (Mercy College) opened in 2003, it has consistently enrolled high quality students and made a great impact on the community. Of the 433 graduates from the Youngstown location, 91% work in the greater Mahoning Valley helping to address the shortage of Registered Nurses in the area. Interim Dean of Mercy College's Nursing Division, Patricia McAllen PhD, RN, CNE, says, "The overwhelming majority of our graduates choose to work at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital but as a Registered Nurse they can literally find employment wherever they choose to live. We are so pleased students can get a quality education, graduate and then  and graduates can find employment where they want to live, learn, and work."

To promote educational opportunities in the area, a new 35ft high by 20ft wide banner with information about Mercy College was installed on Thursday, January 21  on the Cardiac Rehab Building of St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital that houses Mercy College's Youngtown location.

Supporting the Study of Nursing to a ‘Hire’ Degree

Erin Hennessey, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, Associate Program Chair of the RN to BSN Online Completion Program at Mercy College of Ohio, understands the emotional and physical demands of going to nursing school as well as anyone. She joined Mercy College after earning her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. It was this intense academic experience that ‘put her in the shoes’ of the students she works with every day. “I did a completion program myself, and I did it with two kids, a husband and a fulltime job,” said Hennessey. “So I do completely understand the challenges that come along with having multiple responsibilities, but also, wanting to take that ‘next step’ professionally to open up new doors.”
