Elizabeth Cannon is a driven and goal-oriented individual who has made it her mission to steer clear of college debt. Once she decided to pursue a career in healthcare she enrolled in a two-month program to become a State Tested Nursing Aid (STNA) which she obtained in May of 2022. She reasoned that this was the quickest and most cost-effective route to obtain a license and secure a job with an employer willing to invest in her education. She researched employers offering tuition benefits as that was essential.

In July of 2022, Elizabeth accepted a position as a Patient Care Assistant in the Surgery Department at Mercy Health Perrysburg Hospital, fully intending to pursue a career in nursing. Her perspective on the field broadened significantly under the mentorship of the Director of Surgery, Keith Hanf. His encouragement led her to consider enrolling in the Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology program at Mercy College, which she ultimately determined to be her next logical step.

Throughout her academic journey at Mercy College, she has consistently earned a place on the honors list, all while maintaining a schedule of 36 hours at the hospital and an additional 5 hours at a second job each week.

In September, Elizabeth transitioned into the role of Orthopedic Tech, where she plays a crucial role in maintaining the surgical workflow. Her responsibilities include cleaning, stocking, and scrubbing into surgeries. She also actively participates in surgeries by holding retractors, limbs, and suction devices, all while gaining invaluable experience in the field.

She has enjoyed the camaraderie she has found at Perrysburg Hospital and is proud to be part of a team that works cohesively, ensuring that no one is left behind and everyone strives for success. She looks forward to working there as a Surgical Technologist upon graduation.
