Simulation Prepares Students to Care for Patients Experiencing Opioid Overdoses

Kathryn Bubrig

Mercy College collaborated with the Toledo Lucas County Health Department and Drug Abuse Response Unit (DART) to address the scope of the opioid problem and the stigma attached. Mercy College Nursing and Paramedic students participated in an interprofessional simulation Sunday, June 13 through Saturday, June 19, to learn best practices when caring for a patient experiencing an opioid overdose. In addition, they discussed how the skills, attitudes and behaviors of healthcare professionals could impact patient outcomes. Students became aware of their ethics and values to ensure patients are supported in a compassionate method that values human dignity.
