Mercy College Disaster Day
The 2022 Disaster Day at Mercy College of Ohio included students from three Mercy College healthcare programs (Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), Nurses and Physician Assistants (PA) and Medical Technology students from Northview High School.
In a simulated boiler room explosion, the high school students portrayed the victims, and the EMT students provided pre-hospital care and transport. The Physician Assistant and nursing students worked together to triage, assess, and treat incoming patients in a simulated emergency room. They also worked with a physician in a simulated inpatient setting to treat burn and trauma patients. Sound effects, make-up, and an actual boiler room all added to the realism.
Each member of the care team has a crucial role in providing patients with the best possible care and effective communication, critical thinking, and teamwork are essential skills for those preparing for healthcare careers.
