Description | Mercy College Prepares Healthcare Students for Real-World Challenges in Disaster Day Simulation Mercy College of Ohio is thrilled to announce its fall 2023 Disaster Day, a biannual interprofessional event designed to strengthen the skills and readiness of future healthcare professionals. This dynamic educational initiative brings together students from various healthcare programs to immerse them in real-world scenarios, ensuring they are well-equipped to excel in their chosen careers. On November 10, 2023, Mercy College will bring together students from three of its healthcare programs, including Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), Nursing, and Physician Assistant (PA). Additionally, students from Monroe High School's Medical Technology program will join the event, creating a multi-disciplinary learning environment. The highlight of Disaster Day 2023 is the simulation of a boiler room explosion, a scenario that showcases the critical roles healthcare professionals play in times of crisis. During this engaging exercise, Monroe High School students will portray the victims, while EMT students will step into the role of first responders, delivering pre-hospital care and organizing patient transport. Meanwhile, Physician Assistant and nursing students will collaborate in the high-pressure environment of a simulated emergency room to triage, assess, and treat incoming patients, replicating the fast-paced nature of real-world emergencies. A third area of focus for students is participating in simulated trauma room cases to demonstrate collaborative practice in caring for high acuity burn patients. An added layer of authenticity to this immersive experience is provided by sound effects and make-up, transforming students into realistic "patients" and the presence of an actual boiler room, all contributing to the heightened sense of realism and urgency throughout the day. The Disaster Day Simulation underscores the vital importance of effective communication, critical thinking, and teamwork in healthcare. These essential skills are honed during the event, preparing students to deliver the best possible care to their future patients. |
