DESCRIPTION:Mercy College Prepares Healthcare Students for Real-World Ch
allenges in Disaster Day Simulation Mercy College of Ohio is
thrilled to announce its fall 2023 Disaster Day\, a biannua
l interprofessional event designed to strengthen the skills
and readiness of future healthcare professionals. This dynam
ic educational initiative brings together students from vari
ous healthcare programs to immerse them in real-world scenar
ios\, ensuring they are well-equipped to excel in their chos
en careers. On November 10\, 2023\, Mercy College will bring
together students from three of its healthcare programs\, i
ncluding Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT)\, Nursing\, and
Physician Assistant (PA). Additionally\, students from Monr
oe High School's Medical Technology program will join the ev
 ent\, creating a multi-disciplinary learning environment. Th
e highlight of Disaster Day 2023 is the simulation of a boil
er room explosion\, a scenario that showcases the critical r
oles healthcare professionals play in times of crisis. Durin
g this engaging exercise\, Monroe High School students will
portray the victims\, while EMT students will step into the
role of first responders\, delivering pre-hospital care and
organizing patient transport. Meanwhile\, Physician Assistan
t and nursing students will collaborate in the high-pressure
environment of a simulated emergency room to triage\, asses
s\, and treat incoming patients\, replicating the fast-paced
nature of real-world emergencies. A third area of focus for
students is participating in simulated trauma room cases to
demonstrate collaborative practice in caring for high acuit
y burn patients. An added layer of authenticity to this imme
rsive experience is provided by sound effects and make-up\,
transforming students into realistic "patients" and the pres
ence of an actual boiler room\, all contributing to the heig
htened sense of realism and urgency throughout the day. The
Disaster Day Simulation underscores the vital importance of
 effective communication\, critical thinking\, and teamwork i
n healthcare. These essential skills are honed during the ev
ent\, preparing students to deliver the best possible care t
 o their future patients.
