Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Submitted by Suzanne Hall

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: About 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men have experienced physical violence, sexual violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime. Over 43 million women and 38 million men have experienced psychological aggression by an intimate partner in their lifetime. About 1 in 6 homicide victims are killed by an intimate partner. How can we as staff, faculty, and students help prevent domestic violence (also known as intimate partner violence)? Learn about the characteristics of a healthy, non-violent relationship. Learn the warning signs of an unhealthy relationship for yourself, for loved ones, and for patients. Find out what resources are available in your community for survivors. We all deserve to be safe in our relationships. Watch for more information this month about information and resources regarding domestic violence.

Annual Enrollment: October 16th-November 5th

The Mercy Day of Service is an opportunity for us to live out our mission and core values in the wider community. We will spend time with some of our community partners, learning about their work, and helping them with a needed project/task. After our service is complete, we’ll return to campus for lunch as well as some reflection and conversation on how our mission invites us to be in relationship with our wider community.

Additional Information, available service placements, and sign up can be found here.
