Thank You to Our Incredible Team – and an Invitation to Join Us!
Submitted by Dawn Borgerson MSN, RN, CCRP Director, Simulation & IPE
IPE Disaster Day, held each Spring and Fall semester, is an extraordinary large-scale interprofessional simulation that brings together students from Nursing, EMT, Paramedic, PA, and RAD programs. Each semester, around 80-100 students and 20 faculty work together to create a realistic and immersive learning experience. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the entire team that makes this event so impactful for our students.
It takes immense coordination and weeks of preparation from the Nursing Skills Lab, Simulation Lab, and RAD Lab. A special shout-out to our RAD faculty for replicating procedures and injuries, enabling real-time imaging results in the emergency and trauma rooms that was new this year.
Furthermore, we extend our sincere appreciation to the local Med Tech programs, whose high school students take on essential roles as simulated injured patients. Their involvement adds a critical layer of authenticity to the disaster scenarios, challenging our healthcare students to respond to realistic, high-pressure situations. This collaboration not only enriches the simulation experience but also provides invaluable early exposure to healthcare settings for the high school participants, inspiring them to consider future careers in the field.
This event thrives on the dedication and collaboration of our incredible staff, faculty, and community partners. Each IPE Disaster Day is a true team effort, and we're always looking for enthusiastic individuals to help us make it even better! If you're interested in contributing to the success of future sessions and joining our outstanding team, we'd love to hear from you.
Mercy Health, Toledo Public Schools, Mercy College celebrate investment in health science academy
Six months after breaking walls to kick off construction on a new regional Pre-Medical and Health Science Academy, Mercy Health, Mercy College of Ohio and Toledo Public Schools recognized the state investment in the development of Toledo’s area students and future workforce. As a result of a $500,000 allocation from the State Capital Budget program, the construction of the academy is well underway on the fifth floor of the Mercy College of Ohio building. This marks a significant investment in the Toledo region and highlights our state legislators’ commitment to workforce development and health care education. The 20,000-square-foot renovation within the Mercy College building is anticipated to be completed in early 2025.
Working together, and with continued state investment in our region, Mercy Health, Mercy College of Ohio and Toledo Public Schools are working to fill a desperate need for medical-related jobs in the community. The Pre-Medical and Health Science Academy will educate students interested in medical and clinical careers through a state-of-the-art learning experience starting in 2025.
“We so appreciate the support of our state representatives, Mercy Health and Mercy College in helping local students make their dreams of working in the medical field a reality,” said Dr. Romules Durant, CEO/Superintendent, Toledo Public Schools. “The expansion of the Pre-Medical and Health Science Academy to this campus allows us to welcome more students to this exemplary program who will become the next medical professionals to provide care to the residents of our community.”
“We are excited to collaborate with Mercy Health and TPS to provide area students with exceptional opportunities and resources, fostering their future success in healthcare. Investment in healthcare education is an investment and a stronger, healthier community,” said Dr. Trevor Bates, President, Mercy College of Ohio.
The academy will be among the first medical magnet schools in the country where high school students can complete their high school degrees and earn college credits. In its first year, the academy will welcome juniors and seniors will expand to sophomores through seniors by year two. When full, the academy will educate 160 students.
Junior Achievement Visit
Today, Admissions welcomed Junior Achievement 5th-year students for a career exploration shadowing event in partnership with Mercy Health. In the morning, students had the opportunity to shadow healthcare professionals at various Mercy Health facilities. In the afternoon, they visited Mercy College, where they enjoyed lunch and presentations from Mercy Health's Talent Acquisition team, as well as an overview of the college's diverse academic programs. The day concluded with hands-on simulation activities in the Biology Lab and Simulation Center, offering students a dynamic, real-world glimpse into healthcare careers.
