Students Prepared for Real-World Challenges in Annual Disaster Day Simulation

Attachment 1 3

On Friday, November 10, 2023, Mercy College brought together students from Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), Nursing, and Physician Assistants (PA) for Disaster Day. Monroe High School's Medical Technology program students joined the event, creating a multi-disciplinary learning environment.

Disaster Day is an interprofessional event designed to strengthen the skills and readiness of future healthcare professionals. This dynamic educational initiative brings together students from various healthcare programs to immerse them in real-world scenarios, ensuring they are well-equipped to excel in their chosen careers.

Students participated in the simulation of a boiler room explosion, a scenario showcasing the critical roles healthcare professionals play in crisis. Monroe High School students portrayed the victims, while EMT students stepped into the role of first responders, delivering pre-hospital care and organizing patient transport. Meanwhile, Physician Assistant and nursing students collaborated in the high-pressure environment of a simulated emergency room to triage, assess, and treat incoming patients, replicating the fast-paced nature of real-world emergencies. A third area of focus for students was participating in simulated trauma room cases to demonstrate collaborative practice in caring for high-acuity burn patients.

Sound effects and make-up provided an added layer of authenticity to this immersive experience, transforming students into realistic "patients," and the presence of the actual boiler room all contributed to the heightened sense of realism and urgency throughout the day.
