Retention and Success Strategies
Submitted by Kristen Porter
Early Alerts are an important tool that is used to support the retention and persistence of students. Through the Early Alert Referral System (EARS) we can work to connect students with resources. To help with better tracking and use of data it is important that we, as a college, use the early alert system in the same way. Here are some guidelines to follow moving forward and submitting an early alert:
1. Submit ALL alerts through this form.
a. Fill in as much information as you can for the alert to help with communication to the student and support resources trying to connect with the student
2. Use EARS for ACADEMIC purposes/concerns, such as missing class, poor exam/quiz grades, lack of participation, difficulty completing assignments, poor communication, and many other reasons.
3. EARS can be submitted at any point in the semester but the sooner the better, you do not need to wait until mid-term to have concerns about a student or submit the alert.
4. Nursing faculty – please submit an EARS for each student after each exam in which the student does not achieve a passing grade (no longer send an email list, submit an EARS).
Reminder to take the Experience Survey
It’s important that we hear about your experience with the ministry and we want to hear your voice. The Experience Survey will remain open until May 31. Please take a few moments to provide your honest feedback. Your answers will remain confidential and are important to our ministry.
You should have received via secure email a personalized link to the survey from Bon Secours Mercy Health – noreply@qemailserver.com. Alternatively, you can click here to learn about ways the survey can be completed on either a desktop or mobile device, and this video can inform you of what to expect in The Experience Survey.

Junior Achievement Inspire
Submitted by Andrea Schuster
Mercy Health sponsored the Junior Achievement Inspire event at the Glass City Center (formerly the Seagate Center) in downtown Toledo last Wednesday, May 11. This was an event that engages 8th-12th grade students in hands-on, experiential exhibits with local companies. The aim was to expose students to career opportunities available, create connections and help to inspire them toward a pathway for future success. Mercy College participated in the event by offering presentations and demonstrations throughout the day within the Mercy Health designated area. The College’s presentations included “booth” demonstrations showcasing the EMT/Medic, Polysomnographic, Biology, Phlebotomy, Imaging, and Nursing fields as well as a recruiting/Admissions booth. Mercy Health also brought in an EMS van, an Ambulance, and staff from Talent Acquisition, Volunteer services, and other service line demonstrators.
A very big thank you to all of the faculty and staff who participated including:
Jason Waltmire, Tim Depinet, Jessie Coombs, Miranda Gelb, Nkemdi Jones, Bill Taylor, Barbara Stoos, Leisa Morrison, Mike Whitmer, Quentin Moore, Dawn Borgerson, Gail Lis, Kristi Schlatter, Sandy Michalski, James Allen, Laura Longoria, Denise Hudgin, and Hannah Bohn.
Congratualtions Laurel Gotha!
