Faculty & Staff Newsletter

January 12, 2021

Welcome to Spring semester 2021! I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday and that your New Year is off to a great start. Below is the headcount information for the first day of the Spring semester. Thank you Mary Bergs for this information.

We have much to be proud of in our recruitment for the Spring semester. As you will see, our numbers are ahead of last year, and for the first time in two years we have not only achieved the credit hour goal (11,134) for the Spring semester but we exceeded it by 660 hours. The number of new students increased in the following programs: HCA, BSMI, ASN Youngstown, Pre Rad, and Pre Rec ABSN. Enrolling more students in the Pre Recs for ABSN is critical as we will be enrolling the first class in the ABSN program this May. Congratulations to everyone especially the Admissions Team. They have worked tirelessly to recruit new students to Mercy College. The new student goal for Spring 21 was 160 students and presently we have 222 new students enrolled. I can not be more proud of the work they have done, especially in light of a pandemic, working from home, and doing everything in a virtual world. Admission Team you ROCK!!!!!!

Our consulting work continues with Ruffalo Noel Levitz. To date, the Enrollment team has met with Dr. Jeff Gates for several hours reviewing the admission process for Mercy College. We are looking at what we do, what can we do differently, what are best practices and what might we stop doing. A SWOT analysis has been conducted. The next meeting with Dr. Gates is scheduled for January 26, 27, and 28 where will dive deeply into the recruiting process. As always, I will keep you updated on our progress. The consulting work will continue through June of 2021 and will include all aspects of the Enrollment process. At this time, we have posted the Admission Officer position to replace Hannah Bohn. The review of applications is beginning and my hope is that we will welcome a new staff member in March.

Pathfinder, our automated marketing tool, is up and working providing regular contact with prospective students. Pathfinder also provides us the opportunity to be in continual contact with prospective students until they enroll at Mercy College, making sure we are pulling the students through the enrollment funnel. I am very excited about the success of Pathfinder and what it is doing for the recruitment of new students to the College.

Work continues on the Strategic Plan for the College and at the February assembly, the updated plan will be shared with the entire community.

The Enrollment Division wishes you the best Spring semester. If you have questions regarding any of this information or any other areas of Enrollment, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any member of the Enrollment team. The Admission Team is already moving on with the recruitment process for both the Summer and Fall semesters. 😊

Mercy College Submits Proposal for Choose Ohio First Grant

Submitted by Hannah Bohn

In December 2020, Mercy College submitted a proposal for the Choose Ohio First (COF) grant, a state award which was designed to significantly strengthen Ohio’s competitiveness within STEMM disciplines and STEMM education. If awarded, COF could provide up to $642,100 in scholarships over a five-year period to students in the Community Health Worker, Ophthalmic Assistant, Paramedic, and Polysomnographic Technology Certificates at Mercy. Leadership at Mercy strongly believe this would strengthen the College’s ability to attract and retain talent within our STEMM certification programs. Proposal review began in December and notification of awarded proposals will take place in March 2021. Proposals are reviewed based on project rationale and quality of programs offered at the College, recruitment and enrollment strategies (special considerations given to institutions that focus on the recruitment of women and socially disadvantaged individuals), student support services offered to aid students with retention and completion of program, work-based learning opportunities available to students, programs of study selected, and the degree to which the programs selected are integrated with the strengths and needs of the regional/statewide economy. Thank you to everyone who responded to direct requests for data and information. Those hoping to learn more about Mercy College’s proposal for the Choose Ohio First grant are welcome to contact Hannah Bohn, Coordinator of Alumni/Grants, at hannah.bohn@mercycollege.edu.
