Math Placement Assessment Information

Jump to related links

Review your acceptance letter to determine if you are required to take a math placement assessment. Students who are required to complete a math placement assessment will be notified in their acceptance letter.

Students who have not taken an Algebra course within the last 7 years and have not earned a minimum of 12 credit hours from a regionally accredited institution of higher education may be required to complete the math placement test before enrolling in a math course required for their major.

If a student has been admitted to either the Nursing or Radiologic Technology program and shows a need for additional coursework in mathematics as identified by the math placement assessment, the student will not be able to start the clinical portion of the program until the math requirement courses are successfully completed. All other students must complete additional coursework within the first two semesters at Mercy College or risk dismissal. Students should discuss their program requirements with their Academic Advisors to determine the best course of action for completion of the math assessment program.

NEW INFORMATION FOR MATH PLACEMENT AS OF JUNE 25, 2026!!

Students requiring a math placement must complete a proctored math placement assessment to be able to register for their courses.

Students who are accepted to Mercy College of Ohio and are required to complete a proctored math placement assessment will be provided with information to the math placement software online. Students will create an account, take the initial knowledge check, and work through subsequent learning modules and practice assessments prior to attending New Student Orientation. The final proctored math placement assessment will be provided prior to the New Student Orientation event on the same day (registration is required). Students should allow a few weeks to work through the math placement software prior to New Student Orientation.

If you are enrolled in a program that is fully online and you do not live within a 60-mile radius of the College, please contact the Testing Center at (419) 251-2106 or testingcenter@mercycollege.edu.

What to Expect for the Proctored Math Placement Assessment

  • Students will register for New Student Orientations online and indicate the need to complete a proctored math placement assessment.
  • A few weeks PRIOR to their scheduled New Student Orientation, students follow the instructions provided to create an account online and work through the math placement program.
  • Students arrive to campus and complete their proctored math placement assessment PRIOR to New Student Orientation. Once logged into the program, students are provided with a password to enter the proctored assessment. Cameras and video monitoring may be used during proctored assessments.
  • Valid photo ID must be presented at event to take the proctored math placement assessment (no exceptions). Current state issued ID, driver’s license, passport, Mercy College Student ID, or Current High School Photo ID for students still in High School are accepted. Electronic IDs are currently not accepted.
  • The placement assessment provides 2 hours to complete, although most students finish within one hour.
  • The assessment may be as long as 20 randomized questions.
  • The math placement score will appear at the end of the assessment.
  • Students who arrive late to the event may be able to start the assessment (at the proctor’s discretion) but will not have the full two hours to complete.
  • If you are unable to attend the event, please notify the Testing Center at (419) 251-2106 as soon as possible.
  • The score will be used to place students into their respective math courses during New Student Orientation.

What do the scores mean?

The scores of the assessments are determined by the Math and Sciences department, based on the course content. The following scores determine what level of math you are prepared to take:

(0 – 29) = Math 098 (remedial math, no credit)
(30-45) = Math 100
(46-60) = Math 104 - Math 145
(61 – 100) = Math 150

What if I am Not Satisfied with the Proctored Placement Score?

Students who have completed the proctored placement score should discuss their score results and course placement with their Academic Advisors. Students may opt to schedule one proctored math placement retake by contacting the Testing Center for a 2.5 hour appointment (see contact information below).
