Mercy College’s MRI Safety course (IMG 445) is designed for individuals who are ARRT certified in Magnetic Resonance (MR) that want to advance their career in a flexible, online environment. The MR Safety course seeks to prepare MRI technologists for roles in MRI Safety. The goal is to prepare students for the MRSO certification exam.

Note this course is not endorsed by or affiliated with the ABMRS.

Seven-week fully online course:

  • The online course is offered May-July (Summer) each year.
  • The intense seven-week course experience is intended to expose you the didactic components necessary to be successful on the American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety (ABMRS) Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) certification exam. The course follows the ABMRS Examination Content Syllabus (PDF).

​This course will present a holistic overview of safety considerations in MRI. Topics may include magnetic fields, contrast agents, implant and device safety, and comprehensive screening procedures. Safety zones, pregnancy policies, patient codes, and the role of a Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer will also be discussed.

At the end of the MRI Safety course, students will be able to:

  • Identify potential hazards in the Magnetic Resonance (MR) environment
  • Describe elements of safety management used in Magnetic Resonance (MR) departments
  • Recommend protocols for proper patient screening and procedure preparation
  • Explain the effects of static and transient magnetic fields on the human body
  • Evaluate if specific medical devices can be scanned for a procedure
  • Determine MR zones on room design schematics
  • Discuss medicolegal and accreditation issues involving MR safety

The cost of the seven-week educational experience is approximately $1800. The approximate price includes tuition, application fee, and credit hour fees. The price does not include the cost of the course textbook. Contact your employer about the potential for financial assistance or tuition reimbursement. Mercy College is a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

In addition, the course uses a collection of academic white papers, practice standards, and best practice resources in MRI Safety to create a unique and dynamic learning experience to prepare you for the MRSO exam.

To register for this course you will need to apply to the college as special student status. Apply using the online application and simply select "Special Student Status" from the "Program of Study" menu. Students who enroll in the course in this capacity are not offered Federal financial aid, scholarships, or grants.
