Meal Packing Event Exceeds Goal

Collage 2

Mercy College’s service activity exceeded the goal by packing 10,132 meals. As part of the Heritage Week Celebration, faculty, staff, and students packed meals to demonstrate their commitment to the college's values and recognize the founders, the Sisters of Mercy. This service activity exemplified Mercy College’s commitment to fostering community and positively impacting the world. The event demonstrated the college's dedication to its values and mission while honoring the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy.

Participants found meaning in the physical activity of preparing the ingredients for those in need. Many were struck by how such a small amount of food feeds six adults or twelve children by simply adding boiling water.

The event was arranged by the Division of Student Affairs, who paid for the meals ($.35 per meal) and recruited the volunteers. Representatives from the Kids Coalition Against Hunger and SewHope shared how nutritionally complete and impactful the food is, with two thirds of the meals sent around the world and the remaining meals distributed locally.

Gerald Cameron, M.Div., M.Ed., the Director of Community and Spiritual Engagement at Mercy College, expressed the significance of this service project, stating, "Service is a foundational value of our college, and we believe that engaging in a meaningful project is an excellent way to honor our founders, the Sisters of Mercy.
