Compliance/Risk Management/Title IX Update-Policy News

At the March 2019 Board of Trustees meeting, the following updated policies were approved: 141-College Travel Policy and Waivers, 174-Records Retention, 202-Faculty Evaluation of Qualifications, 227-Adjunct Faculty Evaluation, and 507-CARE Team. One new policy was approved: 505-Emotional Support-Service Animal-Pet Policy. These policies can all be found on the Hub under Mercy College of Ohio in the Compliance (Public) community.

Questions regarding policies can be addressed to the owner of each policy, which is listed in the policy footer. For the June 2019 Board of Trustees meeting, the following policy revisions will be put forth for approval: 109-Civil Rights/Nondiscrimination, 302-Use of Copyrighted Material, and 501-Accessibility. Many if not all of these policy revisions will be reflected in the College catalog, program handbooks, and other relevant college publications for the coming academic year. Policy updates such as the one provided in this newsletter will take place quarterly in the future following Board of Trustees meetings in September, November, March, and June of each year to effectively communicate policy changes which have a direct impact on the College community.

A question often asked is how Mercy Health and Mercy College policies apply to members of the College community. The simple answer is, all Mercy Health (now Bon Secours Mercy Health-BSMH) policies should be considered applicable to Mercy College employees. It is, of course, more complex than that, as there are system-wide as well as region-specific policies within BSMH, and then we also have Mercy College policies that govern the institution's faculty, staff, and students. Mercy College Administration and the Mercy College Board of Trustees ensure all institutional, Board-approved policies do not conflict with any BSMH policies and do not replace BSMH policies where unnecessary. If employees ever have a question regarding the applicability of BSMH policies, please contact the Office of Compliance and Risk Management at 419-251-1710. Several BSMH policies that affect college employees have recently been updated and are effective May 31, 2019: Appearance and Attire, Arrests and Convictions, Children in the Workplace, Employment at Will, Mandatory Education, Nepotism and Employment Conflicts of Interest, Non-Harassment and Non-Discrimination, Social Media, Solicitation and Distribution, Voluntary Separation of Employment, Workplace Violence Prevention, Equal Employment Opportunity, Break Periods for Nursing Mothers, and Executive Talent Acquisition Hiring. Employees can find full policies on the Hub.

In preparation for the HLC site visit this fall, the Federal Compliance team has completed a new form that was rolled out by HLC in early 2019 and is in the process of gathering evidence and documentation to support institutional federal compliance. We are also working on a new matrix provided by HLC to identify institutional policies and procedures by criterion to help prepare the assurance argument and site visit.
