Dawn AuBuchon, DNAP-CRNA : Professor, Director Nurse Anesthesia
Dawn AuBuchon
Dr. AuBuchon has been a dedicated member of the anesthesia community since January 2008 and has maintained continuous certification and active practice as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). She began her career in anesthesia education in 2013 as faculty at Lourdes University (LU) in Sylvania, Ohio. In 2014, she advanced to the role of Assistant Program Director at LU and later became the Program Director, a position she held until August 2019, when she decided to pursue other passions. In August 2021, Dr. AuBuchon joined the inaugural team at South College in Knoxville, TN, where she played a key role in developing their inaugural Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) - Nurse Anesthesia program (NAP), which successfully launched in January 2022. She continued her full-time faculty role at South College until September 2023. In December 2021, Dr. AuBuchon began providing consulting services through CRNA Prep School Academy, assisting future CRNA candidates with transcript reviews, one-on-one sessions, workshops on emotional intelligence, stress management, wellness, interview preparation, and other professional and educational topics within the nurse anesthesia field. She continued her consulting work through April 2024. In April 2023, Dr. AuBuchon began officially consulting for Mercy College of Ohio, exploring the development of an inaugural DNP program with the intention of pursuing accreditation for a nurse anesthesia track. In June 2024, she was formally hired to lead the development of the DNP-Nurse Anesthesia program at Mercy College of Ohio (Toledo) and to serve as its Director. Dr. AuBuchon is passionate about mentoring students to become exceptional professionals in the nurse anesthesia community, ensuring they provide top-tier anesthesia care. She is also deeply committed to student mental health and wellness, self-care, preparing nurse anesthesia students for clinical residency, and fostering emotional intelligence. Her areas of didactic instruction include stress management and wellness for nurse anesthesia students, emotional intelligence, the anesthesia gas machine, ethics, pain management, physical assessment, anesthesia principles (basic and advanced), anesthesia board preparation, and simulation and skills lab training. As a lifelong learner, Dr. AuBuchon plans to pursue a certificate in Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and contribute to nursing journal publications. Dr. AuBuchon is married to Jason, and they have a wonderful daughter, Avah and three entertaining dogs!

Amber Ayres, MSN, RN : Assistant Professor, Nursing
Amber Ayres
Amber Ayres is an Assistant Professor at Mercy College of Ohio and joined the faculty full-time in the Fall of 2024. Professor Ayres holds a Master of Science in Nursing and dual Bachelor of Arts Degrees in both Psychology and Music, all from The University of Toledo. Prior to Mercy, she worked at St. Luke’s Hospital in Maumee, Ohio from 2007 until their close in May 2023. Her areas of hospital experience include Cardiac Step-down and House Supervisor. She has additional experience in home health for adults with Developmental Disorders. Prior to Mercy, she worked as both a Clinical Instructor and a Clinical Lab Associate for a nearby university since January of 2015. Her clinical experience covers acute care, mental health nursing, community health nursing, and nursing practicum work at levels of up to and including graduate level coursework. In her free time, she continues to support music and enjoys live concerts, especially on cruise ships.

Tamam Baiz
Dr. Tamam Baiz is an Associate Professor at Mercy College of Ohio and joined the faculty in fall 2010. Dr. Baiz holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, a Master of Science in Chemistry, and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Toledo. Karin Barbee
Before joining the faculty at Mercy College of Ohio, Karin Wraley Barbee spent seven years as an instructor in the General Studies Writing program at Bowling Green State University. More recently, she spent thirteen years at Siena Heights University where she taught composition and creative writing, ran the university writing center, and served as chair of the English department. Karin has taught basic composition courses focused on developmental writing skills as well as courses emphasizing synthesis and research.

Andra Bell
Andra Bell is an Associate Professor at Mercy College of Ohio and joined the faculty in Fall 2018. Andra Bell holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science & Education from the University of Toledo. She has worked on medical surgical, alcohol and drug detoxification, step-down ICU, gynecology and gynecology oncology at various hospitals. She also has worked as a public health nurse/educator at Wood County Health Department. At Mercy College, Andra Bell’s focus includes teaching first-semester theory, lab and clinical and last-semester clinical. Andra Bell currently resides in Ohio. James Bier, PhD, BS : Associate Professor, Arts & Sciences
James Bier
Dr. Jim Bier is an Associate Professor in the Arts & Sciences Division of Mercy College of Ohio. He teaches microbiology every semester to nursing and allied health students, ecology and genetics to upper-class biology majors, a full year biology course for first-year biology majors, and biology for non-science majors. In the past, he has also taught a course on the science in science fiction. He was born and raised in Toledo, spent fourteen years away while attending Xavier University for his B.S, Indiana University for his Ph.D. in biology, and Michigan State University as a postdoctoral associate at the Center for Microbial Ecology. He returned to Toledo to teach at Mercy College in 1998. During his graduate and postdoctoral years, Dr. Bier studied the ecology and evolution of symbioses, such as fungi that live inside of plants, viruses that live inside of fungi, and plasmids that inhabit bacteria. At Mercy College, his most recent research has examined the effects of low-stakes testing on student performance. His interests outside of work include visiting natural areas, doing crossword and sudoku puzzles, playing games with his three children and wife, gardening, and converting a portion of his backyard into a wildlife habitat. Dr. Bier’s parents immigrated from northeastern Italy, and he grew up speaking Friulan, an Italian dialect, with his family and English with his friends.

Sung-David Chun, PhD, MA, BA : Professor, Arts & Sciences
Sung-David Chun
Dr. Sung David Chun is a professor of sociology at Mercy College of Ohio. He joined Mercy College in 2006, having previously taught at the University of Notre Dame and at Bethel College. He was also a research scientist at the Institute of Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame. He studied English as an undergraduate at Korea University and earned a MA in Korean Society from the Academy of Korean Studies and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Notre Dame. In addition to this extensive teaching experience, he has published numerous articles on Asian-American and Latino issues. He is particularly interested in the ways that culture and religion intersect with other forces of marginalization to influence Latinos’ financial and health behaviors. He currently has two research projects: Latino migrant farm workers and the social mobility of healthcare professionals. He has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Social Welfare and Human Rights since 2014.

Jennifer Cruz
Professor Jennifer Cruz, MSPAS, PA-C is one of the principal faculty of the PA Program at Mercy College of Ohio. Professor Cruz holds a bachelor’s degree with a major in healthcare studies and a minor in biology and an MS in physician assistant studies from Daemen College in Amherst, NY. She joined Mercy College of Ohio in 2020 after over a decade of full-time practice as a Physician Assistant. She enjoys helping students grow into practicing clinicians and promoting patient advocacy. Her work as a practicing PA focused on Hematology/Oncology patients from acute care in the hospital setting, outpatient care during active treatment, and then aiding patient’s transition into survivorship. Her professional career includes employment at several institutions including the renowned Moffitt Cancer Center. She is an active member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Ohio Association of Physician Assistants, Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology as well as the Association of Physician Assistants in Oncology. In her free time, Professor Cruz enjoys fun activities with her husband and children. Hobbies include baking, crafting, musical theatre, and enjoying the outdoors with her two young boys and equally rambunctious dogs.

Dr. Tim Depinet has over 20 years of experience in healthcare, specifically in Nuclear Medicine and Health Sciences education. He launched the first Mobile Nuclear Cardiac Imaging Service in Northwest Ohio and the first Cardiac Home Care Services in Ohio. His experience includes hospital clinical and management practices, health physics program management, and serving as a Business Administrator in cardiovascular health. Dr. Depinet holds a Doctorate in Education with a focus on Leadership Studies from Bowling Green State University, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. He earned a Master of Public Health with a concentration in Administration from the Northwest Ohio Consortium for Public Health and a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology from The University of Findlay. In his career, Dr. Depinet has held roles such as Director of Health Sciences Certificate Programs and Assistant Professor at Mercy College of Ohio. He has developed and redesigned healthcare courses and has participated in professional committees. He has published scholarly works and delivered presentations in the fields of public health and nuclear medicine. Dr. Depinet has managed research grants and has experience in healthcare education and administration.

Neeli Engelhart
Neeli Axler Engelhart, MMS, PA-C, is a Principal Faculty member of the PA Program at Mercy College of Ohio. Neeli holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Master in Medical Sciences in Physician Assistant Studies from Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Illinois. Neeli started her work in academia in 2002 and has worked in PA and nursing education at Midwestern University, Northwestern University, and the Jerusalem College of Technology before joining the faculty at Mercy College of Ohio. Neeli’s clinical career has been in general surgery and adolescent medicine and focused not only on the treatment of patients but on patient education, a passion of Neeli’s, that complements her teaching style and her interest in PA education. In 2014, Neeli, her husband, and four sons relocated to Israel. Since the international move, Neeli has been involved in trying to bring Physician Assistant education to Israel. Neeli has been teaching in nursing programs and has recently taken an active role in facilitating dynamic ways to teach through distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Courtney Erwin
Courtney Erwin, MS, MSBS, PA-C is one of the principal faculty of the PA Program at Mercy College of Ohio. She holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Biology from Bowling Green State University, as well as a Master of Science in Biomedical Science – Physician Assistant Studies from the Medical College of Ohio. Professor Erwin joined Mercy College in 2023 after more than two decades of full-time clinical practice as a Physician Assistant. Her clinical experience includes four years in Dermatology and eighteen years in Emergency Medicine, where she developed a passion for providing high-quality, patient-centered care in fast-paced environments. She continues to practice Emergency Medicine with Riverwood Emergency Services, which staffs Bon Secours Mercy facilities. Professor Erwin began her career in PA education in 2020 and has served in various academic leadership roles, including Principal Faculty, Didactic Coordinator, and Interim Program Director. She is also an ARC-PA Site Visitor and remains actively engaged in promoting excellence in physician assistant education and accreditation. In her free time, Professor Erwin enjoys attending her children’s sporting events, gardening, and spending quality time with her husband and their two cats.

Dr. Dana Eskins is the Director of Imaging Sciences, Program Director of the Bachelor of Medical Imaging Program, and Associate Professor at Mercy College of Ohio in Toledo, Ohio. Dr. Eskins has extensive expertise in medical imaging and is dedicated to advancing educational standards and patient advocacy within the field. She holds a radiologic technology certificate from Providence Hospital School of Radiologic Technology in Sandusky, Ohio, a bachelor’s degree in advanced radiography from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, a master’s degree in education, and a doctoral degree in Leadership Studies from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Dr. Eskins' professional experience spans over three decades in clinical practice as a registered staff radiologic and CT technologist, as well as an ARDMS-registered sonographer specializing in abdomen and OB/Gyn. Her career also includes significant experience as an educator in radiologic technology and diagnostic medical sonography. Dr. Eskins is recognized for her contributions to imaging education and continues to influence the next generation of healthcare professionals through her leadership and research.

Jill Fabian is a Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) and an advanced practice nurse (APRN) in Ohio. She is an Associate Professor in the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing program at Mercy College of Ohio in Youngstown. She is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC). She has over 15 years of experience in healthcare practice focusing on critical care, pulmonary medicine, medical-surgical nursing, and gastrointestinal health; she has more than 8 years of experience in the academic setting focusing on medical-surgical nursing and critical care. Rebecca Frank
Becky Frank has been a registered and licensed radiographic technologist since 2008. Ms. Frank joined Mercy College in the fall of 2019 as the Radiology Lab Coordinator and moved to the role of Assistant Professor in the fall of 2022. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Arts from Western Michigan University and obtained a Master of Radiologic Sciences in 2022 from Northwestern State University in Louisiana. Ms. Frank completed her graduate work on the integration of technology into the classroom to enhance student engagement. This work has continued to be a special interest and focus at Mercy College. Ms. Frank enjoys spending time with her family along with reading and watching movies.

Chris Gibbons is a registered radiographer with advanced certification in computed tomography. Mr. Gibbons is also a certified healthcare financial professional and has executive experience in banking, finance, insurance, and securities. Previous experience also includes licenses in life and health, property and casualty, and as a registered securities representative. Mr. Gibbons holds a Certificate in Computed Tomography from Owens Community College, an Associate of Science in Radiologic Technology from Mercy College of Ohio, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from The Ohio State University, a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Findlay, and is currently attending Northcentral University for a Doctorate in Business Administration. His areas of professional expertise are in program development, accreditation, and assessment. Scholarship interests include strategic management performance, balanced scorecards, dashboards, and key performance indicators. Mr. Gibbons has held faculty leadership positions, including two terms as Chair of Faculty Assembly. Carissa Gilgenbach is a radiologic technologist with over 20 years of experience in medical imaging. Carissa holds an Associate of Applied Science degree in Radiography from Owens Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging from Mercy College, and is completing her Master of Health Administration degree through Mercy College. She joined the College as a Radiography Clinical Preceptor in 2009 through a local Bon Secours Mercy Health (BSMH) hospital. She transitioned to full-time faculty as the Radiography Lab Coordinator in 2024. Carissa has been recognized for her innovative, interactive teaching methodologies and enjoys educating the next generation of medical imaging professionals. Brittany Hunter is a radiologic technologist with over a decade of experience in the field. Brittany began her career at a local hospital in Bowling Green, OH, before advancing to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she spent seven years as a clinical preceptor, mentoring radiography students. In 2022, she joined Mercy College as the Lab Coordinator before transitioning into her current role as Clinical Coordinator. Deborah Karns
Dr. Karns has been a nurse and nurse educator for over 40 years. She earned her Nursing Diploma from St. Vincent School of Nursing, her BSN from Lourdes College (now University), her MSN as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Parent-Child Health from Medical College of Ohio (now University of Toledo Medical Center), and her PhD in Nursing Education from the University of Northern Colorado. Throughout her career, she has worked in pediatric nursing on both the general pediatric unit, and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit as a bedside nurse, Assistant Nurse Manager, and in the Pediatric Trauma Coordinator role. Two of her major accomplishments while working at Mercy Health-St. Vincent Medical Center were leading the development of a Child Maltreatment Prevention Team and attaining Level I Trauma Center Verification for Adult and Pediatric care. Currently, Dr. Karns is a full-time faculty member and the Director of the MSN Program at Mercy College of Ohio. She has led the efforts to finalize the development and CCNE accreditation of the MSN Program Leadership and Education Tracks. Her research focus has been on the effects of pet therapy in the college setting, and meaningful learning development in student nurses, the traditional care plan versus the concept-based care plan approach.

Professor Dawn LaBarbera joined Mercy College of Ohio in 2018 as the founding Program Director of the developing PA Program. Dr. LaBarbera holds a bachelor’s degree from Ripon College; MS in physician assistant studies from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Sciences (Finch University); and PhD in Organization and Management from Capella University. As an educator for over two decades, LaBarbera spent over half of that time as a Program Director in which she skillfully led successful accreditation of two different PA programs in the Midwest. She also practices clinically as a primary care PA. Highlights of her academic career include founding the Fort Wayne Area Interprofessional Education Consortium (FWAIPEC), a successful interprofessional education collaboration of graduate health care programs from different teaching institutions; mentoring over 100 master’s research projects and authoring numerous publications and presentations to contribute to the body of PA research. Jennifer Lyons has been a full-time faculty in the Nursing Division at Mercy College of Ohio since the fall of 2018. She has over two decades of nursing experience since obtaining her Bachelor of Science of Nursing degree from Lourdes University in 1999. She graduated with her Master of Science of Nursing from Lourdes University in 2018. While completing her master’s degree, she was presented the Sigma Theta Tau Leadership award and the Lourdes University Spirit of Nursing award. She has spent the majority of her nursing career at Mercy Health primarily working in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU). Ms. Lyons also has experience in medical-surgical and emergency room nursing. She has worked part-time in nursing education since 2005. Dr. Leisa Morrison is a professor at Mercy College where she has been teaching since the spring of 2006. Her area of expertise and research in graduate school focused on endocrine and reproductive physiology. Taryn Slack, MSN, RN : Assistant Professor, Nursing
Taryn Slack
Taryn Slack is a Licensed Registered Nurse and Assistant Professor at Mercy College of Ohio. Her experience is primarily in Pediatrics and Stroke-Neurology. Her educational journey includes the achievement of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Lourdes University and a Master of Science in Nursing with a focus on Nursing Education from Purdue University. From the very beginning of her nursing career, she has been involved with the mentorship of new nurses and is passionate about the successful transition of new graduate nurses. Additional research interests include the use of childhood immunizations and youth suicide. Professor Slack is a member of the National League for Nursing, and The Society for Collegiate Leadership & Achievement.

Tami Steveson, PhD, MS : Associate Professor, Arts & Sciences
Tami Steveson
Dr. Tami C. Steveson, an Associate Professor in Science at Mercy College of Ohio since 2014, has over three decades of experience teaching biology and related science subjects at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Dr. Steveson is originally from Littleton, CO, a graduate of Columbine High School, who earned her Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Ph.D. degrees in Biological Sciences at the University of Denver. While earning her Ph.D., Dr. Steveson acted as an INSERM foreign research exchange scientist in Rouen, France. Dr. Steveson then completed a five-year, NIH funded post-doctoral fellowship in Baltimore, MD, performing research at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, before undertaking an NIH funded Instructorship at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Dr. Steveson was an Assistant Professor at BGSU in the Biology Department running her own research laboratory, in which she trained several undergraduate and graduate students in research, before joining Mercy College. Dr. Steveson’s research involves understanding the effects of endocrine disruptors in neuropeptide processing and trafficking in neuroendocrine cells.

Treasure Sucheck, PhD, BS : Professor, Chemistry Program Coordinator
Treasure Sucheck
Dr. Treasure Sucheck is a chemistry professor with over thirty years of experience teaching chemistry and biochemistry. Dr. Sucheck is the Chair of the Chemistry Department and Professor at Mercy College of Ohio in Toledo. Dr. Sucheck holds a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Defiance College and a PhD in Chemistry from The University of Toledo. Dr. Sucheck has taught at Mercy College since 2007. Before working at Mercy College, she taught chemistry at Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia and Southwestern College in San Diego, CA. Dr. Sucheck’s research interests are in synthesizing organic molecules to potentially be used as antibiotics against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Dr. Sucheck and her students have recently presented their work at several regional and national conferences. Dr. Sucheck is also actively involved in reviewing grant proposals for the National Science Foundation.

Bill Taylor, BA, RPSGT, RST : Polysomnographic Technology Program Lead
Bill Taylor
Bill Taylor holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Toledo and is a registered sleep technologist under the Board of Registered Sleep Technologist. He is the Manager of PSG Operations of St Charles, and St Anne sleep centers in Toledo, Ohio. He has been working in the field of sleep since 1992. He has experience with both pediatric and adult sleep studies, has participated in sleep research, and he has been an invited speaker at the Tri-State Sleep Conference, Global Sleep Conference, and the World Series of Sleep Conference. He has also been a site visitor for CoA PSG. He has been the Program Lead and instructor of the PSG Program at Mercy College since 2010.

Jamie Tooman
Jamie Tooman is a licensed registered nurse with nearly two decades of experience in the acute care setting and the academic setting. Ms. Tooman is the BSN Program Director and Assistant Professor at Mercy College of Ohio. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Spring Arbor University, a Master of Health Administration from the University of Phoenix, and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix. Ms. Tooman’s area of clinical expertise is critical care nursing, nursing management, and case management. She is an active member of Sigma Theta Tau International Society of Nursing. She is also an elected official serving on Benton Carroll Salem local schools Board of Education, a role she has had since 2010.

Kimberly A. Watson
Dr. Kimberly Watson serves as the Dean, Division of Health Sciences, Program Director, MHA Program, and holds the rank of Professor. She has over 30 years of combined healthcare leadership and higher education experiences. She has worked for Mercy Health since 1989, and with Mercy College of Ohio since 1997. She began her educational journey with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Record Administration from Bowling Green State University (BGSU) and is certified as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA). She worked in acute care hospital settings prior to starting the Health Information Technology (HIT) program at Mercy College. She continued her education by obtaining a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Tiffin University, and a Doctor of Education (EdD) in Leadership Studies with a cognate in Higher Education Administration from BGSU. Dr. Watson has held various administrative roles at Mercy College while teaching both land and online courses. She has research interests in various healthcare and academic leadership areas. She has been an invited speaker at local, state, and regional professional conferences. She has been appointed to serve as a member of the Ohio Physician and Allied Health Care Workforce Preparation Task Force.

Julie Young is a Licensed Registered Nurse with two decades of experience in healthcare practice. She is an Assistant Professor in the Nursing Program, the Program Lead and faculty member for the Community Health Worker Program (CHW), at Mercy College of Ohio in Toledo. Ms. Young joined Mercy College in the CHW program in January of 2015 and the Nursing Program in August of 2018. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Toledo, and a Master of Science in Nursing from Walden University.
